This is the only peer-reviewed journal devoted exclusively to objectively analyzing the claims of "alternative medicine." Its purpose is to apply the best tools of science and reason to determine whether hypotheses are valid and treatments are effective. It will reject no claim because it fits, or fails to fit, any paradigm. Rather, it will seek justified answers to two questions: "Is the claim true?" and "Does the treatment work?". The journal's publication has been endorsed by research fellows of the Commission for Scientific Medicine and Mental Health, a panel that includes prominent physicians, scientists, psychologists, and Nobel prize winners.

The journal's purview includes claims regarding the efficacy of psychotherapies and self-enhancement methods, the validity of assessment instruments, and the scientific evidence for psychiatric diagnoses.
